On Monday, United States Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland confirmed that he found Tripoli a lively and calm city during his recent trip to the capital.

In an interview with the Egyptian channel Extra News, Ambassador Norland said that Egypt was important in enabling the political process in Libya, and noted that Cairo has reopened its embassy in Tripoli. He added that supporting the Libyan economy depends on a strong government that can manage its resources. He explained that diplomatic and political support must be provided for all efforts undertaken by the Libyan parties.

The US Ambassador added that the Libyan people want an end to the electricity cuts, and greater management of the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that there are expectations for the Government of National Unity (GNU) to provide services, given that Libya is a country rich in natural resources and has $45 billion USD frozen pending its release. The US envoy indicated that “the frozen funds for Libya are awaiting release … and we will provide political support.”

Ambassador Norland pointed out that he discussed with Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Ageela Saleh the constitutional and legal foundations for the elections scheduled for 24 December, adding that “we will support the Libyans’ desire to expel foreign fighters.”
