The Permanent Mission of Libya to the United Nations (UN), took part in the activities of the 32nd UN General Assembly session on combating corruption, which was held in New York on June 2nd until the 4th. The session shed light on the challenges and measures aimed at preventing and combating corruption, and strengthening international cooperation.
Moussa Al-Shara, Deputy Delegate to the Libyan Mission, gave Libya’s speech before the General Assembly which lays the foundation for building international cooperation in the fight against corruption, highlighting the national efforts to combat corruption.
He stated that Libya was one of the countries to have ratified the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), which has become an essential part of the system of national legislation.
In his speech, Al-Shara stressed that despite the national efforts being made in combating corruption, the state of conflict and instability in the country created an environment conducive to looting and smuggling the Libyan people’s funds abroad.
He noted that Libya has incurred heavy losses as a result of some countries seizing state-owned assets and real estate investments, taking advantage of the political instability the country is going through. This made the issue of smuggled and looted funds and Libyan assets abroad come at the top of the Libyan authorities’ priorities.
Al-Shara stressed that the national efforts, no matter how great they are, need joint international cooperation and positive response by the countries to which these funds were smuggled, urging the international community to make every possible effort to implement UN resolutions concerned with combating corruption.
He also reiterated Libya’s commitment to implementing the provisions of the UNCAC, welcoming any joint international cooperation in this regard.
