On Thursday, the Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Ageela Saleh, said that the Libyan crisis will be settled only by holding the upcoming elections as scheduled, and by unifying state institutions under local and international legitimacy.
In a joint press conference with Moroccan Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita in Rabat, Saleh stressed the need to hold the elections on 24 December 2021. “We still have obstacles in Libya, and we are trying to overcome them,” he said.
The Speaker praised the pivotal role played by Morocco in resolving the Libyan crisis, reiterating his gratitude for Rabat’s unwavering support for a lasting agreement and finding a peaceful solution to the conflict
“Morocco is an influential country. It is also following and monitoring the Libyan conflict without personal interest,” Saleh noted. He also warned against parties seeking to hamper the upcoming elections in Libya, describing them as “criminals.”
Saleh’s visit comes just one day after the conclusion of the Second Berlin Conference on Libya. During the event, political representatives from several countries were invited to Berlin to discuss solutions to Libya’s conflict.
The concluding sentiment of the event was that the situation in Libya “has improved significantly since the First Berlin Conference” that was held last year in 2020. As well as emphasising the need for all foreign fighters and mercenaries to withdraw from the country.
The conference included representatives from Italy, the UK, the US, Egypt, France, Algeria, Turkey, Russia, and Tunisia, among others.
