The Secretary-General of the Libyan Red Crescent, Marai Darsi, held talks in Benghazi with Dr Tushar Rane, head of UNICEF’s sub-office in Libya, to review the latest developments in their humanitarian partnership.

The meeting took place at the Red Crescent’s General Secretariat headquarters and focused on expanding cooperation in emergency response, children’s welfare, and humanitarian relief efforts.

According to a statement by the Libyan Red Crescent, the discussions were attended by Emergency Officer Mai Nabous and International Relations Director Mohamed Jumaa.

Dr Rane praised the active role of Red Crescent volunteers in joint programmes, highlighting their contribution to supporting communities in times of crisis. He also commended Darsi’s efforts to modernise the organisation’s structures and strengthen its branches across Libya.

As part of the visit, UNICEF representatives toured the General Secretariat’s operations room, which is being equipped with advanced technology to improve rapid response, early warning, and crisis management mechanisms. The upgrade aims to enhance the organisation’s ability to deal with emergencies across the country.

In a separate initiative, the Libyan Red Crescent branch in Derna launched a new awareness project in partnership with the Hamza Wasl Centre for Training and Development.

The project, entitled “Health Awareness for Children,” seeks to instil healthy practices among children through an intensive month-long programme. Led by the community health team, the campaign will include eight interactive sessions addressing key topics in hygiene, nutrition, and preventive healthcare.

The initiative reflects the organisation’s broader efforts to combine immediate humanitarian response with long-term capacity building and health education, particularly among younger generations.

Observers note that UNICEF’s strengthened cooperation with the Libyan Red Crescent underscores the importance of local partnerships in addressing the country’s humanitarian and health challenges.
