On Saturday, the Head of Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC), Emad Al-Din Al-Sayeh, said that the parliamentary elections held on June 24th, 2014 during Libya’s transitional period, were the last electoral entitlement conducted by the Commission.
He confirmed that the HNEC has worked hard with all its cadres and committees to successfully implement this constitutional entitlement in accordance with the articles of Law No. 10 of 2014, issued by the General National Congress, and its regulations.
In a statement, Al-Sayeh said that the election law stipulated that the House of Representatives (HoR) is the interim legislative authority of the state in the transitional period, and includes two hundred members chosen by free and direct election.
According to the statement, he stated that the Commission devoted its efforts to developing electoral awareness plans among the Libyan people, increasing the number of registered voters to 1,509,317 of them 603,708 were female voters at 1,625 polling centers nationwide.
Officials said that 30,000 voters had cast their ballots, representing 45 percent of the country’s 1.5 million registered voters.
He confirmed the Commission’s readiness with regards to the technical aspects to conduct the upcoming elections, scheduled for December 24th, 2021. He noted that they are working with the highest professional standards to ensure fair and transparent electoral process.
Al-Sayeh stressed the importance of intensifying efforts among the public administration and its offices to overcome all administrative or technical difficulties.
The United Nations-sponsored Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) selected a new executive authority of a unity government and a Presidency Council, of which the main task is to prepare for the national elections on Decmber 24th.
