On Saturday, the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives (HoR), Ageela Saleh, had a discussion with the National Security Adviser, Ibrahim Bushnaf. They discussed the affairs of the National Security Council (NSC), as well as activating it to serve the higher interest of the country.
During a meeting in the city of al-Qubba, Saleh affirmed his full support for the NASC to serve the competencies stipulated in its establishment law, according to the Libyan News Agency.
The Speaker of the HoR also had discussions with Bushnaf where they spoke about many issues that the NSC will work on in various aspects of life, whether on the level of food, drug, or criminal security.
Notably, the HoR issued its resolution No. 1 of 2021 naming the judge and former Minister of Interior Ibrahim Bushnaf as National Security Adviser, according to Law No. 4 of 2009.
In accordance with the resolution, the NSC is chaired by the Prime Minister and its membership includes the Ministers of Interior, Foreign Affairs, Defence, Economy and Trade, and Finance, in addition to a representative of the armed forces, while its executive affairs are managed by the National Security Adviser.
The council is responsible for preparing the state’s strategy in the areas of internal and external security, defence and foreign policy in a way that ensures the protection of national security and the achievement of the supreme interests of the state. It also directs the various organs of the state to develop their strategies to ensure their integration and coherence, to achieve the protection of national security, and to determine the mechanisms and procedures necessary for this.
It is also concerned with setting plans and programs that would enhance the state’s capabilities in facing sources of threats to national security. It furthermore deals with crises and disasters, proposing draft laws and regulations that enhance the protection of national security, in addition to proposing to declare a state of general mobilization, emergency, and war.
According to sources in the National Security Agency, the council will hold a meeting with all its members headed by the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdelhamid Dbaiba, in the coming days in the capital, Tripoli.
