On Saturday, the Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Othman Jerandi, stressed the importance of continuing Arab support for a political settlement in Libya.

This came during a meeting of the permanent Arab delegates to the United Nations (UN), according to a statement issued by the Media Office of the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As part of his speech, the Minister reviewed the outcomes of the high-level Security Council session on Libya, which was held on Thursday. He stressed the importance of continuing joint Arab support for the political settlement in Libya, as it represents a fundamental part of Libyans’ efforts to meet the current stage’s needs and the ability to achieve security and stability in their country.

Jerandi expressed Tunisia’s satisfaction with the Libyans’ commitment to respect the roadmap issued by the inter-Libyan dialogue held in Tunis in November 2020 and to hold the legislative and presidential elections within the set time frame.

In turn, the Arab diplomats welcomed Tunisia’s supportive position towards the Libyan political process as well as its continued support at the level of regional and international authorities including the UN Security Council.

In the same vein, Jerandi had a talk Thursday at the headquarters of the Tunisian delegation to the UN with Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Ján Kubiš.

He stressed Tunisia’s willingness to help the Libyan political process move forward towards the organisation of elections at the end of this year, in accordance with the roadmap issued by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) held last November in Tunis.

Jerandi underlined the need to respect the ceasefire agreement in order to consolidate security and stability in Libya and the whole region.

On his part, the UN envoy reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to provide all necessary support to Libyan political actors in order to hold the parliamentary and presidential elections on schedule.
