The newly-appointed German Ambassador to Libya, Michael Ohnmacht, said that he was looking forward to Berlin’s continued positive role in Libya.
“Germany has played a positive role over the past years, and my goal is to continue the positive role of Germany in the future,” he said in a video released by the German Embassy to Libya via its official Twitter account on Thursday.
“I am optimistic that my time in Libya will be beneficial,” he said, adding that “I look forward to enhancing cooperation with Libya and Libyans, and to exchange views, which will benefit both sides.”
On Tuesday, Ohnmacht submitted his credentials to the Libyan Foreign Minister, Najla Al-Manqoush.
The German Embassy said that the two discussed the latest developments in Libya, and the political situation in the country. It added that both parties stressed the need to implement the outputs of the Berlin II Conference, the most important of which is holding the December elections on time.
Ambassador Ohnmacht previously held the position of Head of the Middle East and North Africa Department of the German Foreign Ministry.
In June, Germany hosted the Second Berlin Conference on Libya, and was attended by the US, UK, France, Egypt and other states, as well as the United Nations. Libya’s Government of National Unity (GNU) participated for the first time in the Berlin talks, whose first conference was held in January 2020.
