US & Algeria Affirm Need for Unified Libya

On Friday, the United States (US) Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, discussed the developments in Tunisia, Libya, and the Sahel with his Algerian counterpart, Ramtane Lamamra.

The two diplomats agreed on the need for a sovereign, stable, and unified Libya with no foreign interference, according to a statement by the US Department of State.

Last month, US Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Joey Hood, said that the exit of mercenaries is a top priority to enable the Libyan people to restore their full sovereignty as soon as possible, allowing them to hold the general elections “to reach safety.”

In a statement to the Algerian News Agency, Hood said that the views of Algeria and the US are “very close”, especially with regard to resolving the Libyan crisis and the Sahel region.

“We look forward to working with the Algerians to advance our common goals in the Sahel region as well as Libya and elsewhere,” he added.

The American official pointed out that the US is “relying” on Algeria in resolving the Libyan crises. “The US is looking forward to benefit from this diplomatic acumen to settle this important issue,” he noted.
