Libya Parliament Speaker: Elections Only Way Out of Current Crisis

Counselor Ageela Saleh, Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR), questioned how the High Council of State (HCS) would serve as an advisory body to the Parliament while opposing it at the same time.

He, therefore, said that the HCS seeks to create a state of chaos in Libya, stressing that the HoR is the only body competent to issue legislation. The Speaker noted that all courts have annulled the decisions of the previous Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj.

In a televised interview on Friday evening, Ageela added that, “the Libyans have the right to directly elect their next President, who will represent them in all international gatherings and bear responsibilities in ending the decade-long era of chaos and conflict.”

“There are no legislative or legal obstacles to holding the elections, but there are those who create obstacles for their personal interests, in addition to those who fear leaving the political scene if the elections are held,” the HoR Speaker said.

He confirmed that every Libyan citizen can run in the elections, as long as he or she meets the conditions for candidacy. He stressed that, “we do not see a way out for the country except through elections, and if they do not happen, we will return to chaos.”

Saleh said that, “if the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdelhamid Al-Dbaiba, wanted foreign forces to leave, including Turkish ones, he had a strong argument, which is that Parliament did not adopt the Sarraj agreement with the Turks.”

He noted, “Al-Dbaiba’s failure to attend the interrogation session means that he has nothing to answer, and in this case we can move to the option of withdrawing confidence from his government.”
