Prison officials at Qurnada and Bouhdima Prisons in Benghazi have released a number of prisoners who have had their cases aquitted.

The names of the released prisoners are: Anis Al-Nuwaisiri, Saeed Buhdilla, Mundhir Badr, Haitham Dances and Hussam Al-Sheikh.

Qurnada is a notorious detention center where members of suspected terrorist organisations captured from the city of Derna were being held. This includes the infamous Egyptian extremist Hisham Ashmawy, recently executed by Egyptian authorities.

The officials at Bouhdima Prison have taken the same steps and released their detainees. The released prisoners include: Khalil bin Saud, Abdelwanis Ayla, Khaled Al-Baah and Ibrahim Muhammad Kalfa.

In late June 2018, the Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, announced the liberation of Derna and promised its residents a “new era of security, stability and peace”.

At the time, Derna remained the final militant stronghold outside of LNA control in eastern Libya. The city was held by a diverse alliance of Islamist and jihadist militias, including groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.
