During a hearing held on Thursday before the Foreign Affairs Committees of the Italian Senate and Chamber of Deputies to discuss the latest developments in Libya, Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Luigi di Maio said he had invited Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives (HoR) Ageela Saleh to visit Rome.

“I hope to receive Saleh in Italy as soon as possible and as circumstances permit … I have invited him,” the Foreign Minister said, referring to a phone conversation that took place between the two on May 7, according to Italian news agency ‘Agenzia Nova’.

Di Maio stated that he would also meet the Vice President of the GNA’s Presidential Council, Ahmed Maiteeq, in the coming days.

“We have always recognized the Government of National Accord and we have always had a dialogue with the HoR, because we believe in the unity of Libya,” Di Maio added, stressing that talking to all parties means protecting Italian national interests.

During the hearing, Di Maio also said that Italy was working to modernize the military field hospital in Misrata on the request of the Government of National Accord (GNA) to fight against COVID-19.

“The government is coordinating with the Italian Minister of Defense, Lorenzo Guerrini, to take measures to modernize the hospital with the latest medical equipment.” Di Maio stated.

The Italian field hospital in Misrata is currently being used to quarantine repatriated citizens from abroad.
