Libyan MP Calls for Withdrawal of Militias

Libyan MP, Jibril Waheeda stressed the need for “all armed groups to leave Tripoli, to ensure fair and transparent elections are held, with results acceptable to all.”

In press statements on Wednesday, Waheeda said that the withdrawal of armed groups falls under the security arrangements that were reached in the Geneva political agreement.

“All the intervening countries in Libya must take a step back and withdraw their forces and mercenaries. If we want to end the political division, all foreign forces and mercenaries must leave Libya. The Libyan Parliament has always called on the international community to remove foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya.”

In a related context, the Arab Organisation for Human Rights (AOHR) in Libya has recently called for setting a deadline for holding elections.

The AOHR also denounced the presence of foreign forces and mercenaries in the country, affirming that this “constitutes a major obstacle to holding the elections.”

The organization called on the UN to “impose the will of Libyan society by giving effect to the relevant Security Council resolutions. It calls on this especially by accelerating the removal of foreign forces and mercenaries from the country, in a way that allows the Libyan people to exercise their free will, and elect their legitimate leaders.”

Last month, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) revealed that a new batch of Turkish-baked Syrian mercenaries have left Libya for Ankara.

In a statement, SOHR indicated that dozens of Syrian mercenaries left Libya for Turkey. This coincided with the preparations for the sending of a new batch of mercenaries to Libya, which arrived in Turkey a few days ago.

The Observatory indicated that the resumption of back-and-forth transfer operation of Turkish-backed Syrian mercenaries in Libya, comes after a 50 day-hiatus.

According to SOHR sources, hundreds of mercenaries were waiting for permission to spend their leaves in Syria, while hundreds of fighters in Syria were waiting to be transported to Libya. However, the reasons behind the suspension remain unknown, the statement explained.
