Participants in a protest organized on Wednesday in front of the Prime Minister’s headquarters in Tripoli, including medical and paramedical personnel, expressed their rejection of the unified salary scale for medical personnel.
In a statement in coordination with the Libyan General Medical Council (LGMC), the medical staff considered the unified salary scale unfair. They called on the competent authorities to “re-study the proposal and evaluate it according to academic qualifications and career progression.”
The statement also called on officials to activate Resolution (885) for medical personnel, to provide medical equipment and supplies, and to provide a suitable work environment.”
The protesters also called for combating corruption and activating medical insurance for personnel working in the healthcare field. They warned that if their demands are not met, “there will be negative consequences that will directly affect the sector and the people, including mass resignations, and voluntary retirements.”
On Tuesday, the Head of the LGMC, Mohamed Al-Ghouj said: “We will organise another stand on Wednesday in front of the Prime Minister’s Office, to demand doctors’ rights and ensure their implementation.”
“Medical insurance has not yet been activated for workers in the healthcare sector, despite receiving promises and correspondence from December. Allowances for accommodation and official holidays have not been spent. The unified salary scale has not yet been implemented for all agencies affiliated with the Ministry, and it has not been applied correctly. It failed to include a 50% increase in the salary stipulated in this law, nor did it include the teaching allowance for clinical professors. The preoccupation of the designated Minister of Health, Ramadan Abu Janah with more than one position, distracts from his work within the ministry,” he stated.
