On Thursday, the British Ambassador to Libya, Caroline Hurndall concluded her week-long visit to Benghazi, in which she focused on the economy and strengthening the British trade partnership with eastern Libya.
During the visit, she emphasized the importance of “strengthening economic partnerships and encouraging transparency in government spending.”
“The burgeoning economic activities,” she noted, “underscored the potential of the region and the necessity of solidifying trade relations.”
“I’m impressed by the economic growth I’ve seen, from visiting Benghazi’s port to meeting with local businesses,” Hurndall tweeted.
“The vibrancy of the local economy in Benghazi has been a revelation,” she said. “It is imperative for the economic future of the region that we continue to nurture and deepen our commercial partnership.”
During her discussions, Ambassador Hurndall was attentive to the calls for greater transparency in government expenditure. She underscored the fact that all Libyans deserved to see how their government is spending its resources.
“Every Libyan citizen has a right to understand how their government allocates and utilizes funds,” she stated. “Transparency fosters trust and stability, which are critical for the economic and social prosperity of any nation.”
Ambassador Hurndall also emphasized that it was “the responsibility of Libyans to actively participate in the political process, leading to elections and long-term stability in Libya.” She reiterated her support for the political transitions underway and expressed her hope that these processes would lead to a peaceful and prosperous future for the country.
Referencing her talks with key leaders in eastern Libya, such as the Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar and Parliament Speaker Ageela Saleh, the British diplomat emphasized that “it is their responsibility to commit constructively to a political process that leads to elections & long term stability for Libya.”
