“European Source: EU and US Agree to a Comprehensive Ceasefire in Libya”

An informed European source affirmed that the European and American positions are identical on the current situation in Libya, especially in prioritising a political solution over a military one.

According to “AKI”, an Italian news agency, the source mentioned talks that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will hold with his European counterparts next Monday in an off-record video conference.

The source denied there were disagreements between the EU and US regarding the Libyan conflict, stressing that “their shared vision focuses on the necessity of a comprehensive ceasefire, respect for the UN Security Council resolution on banning the flow of arms, and a return to negotiations in accordance with the decisions of the Berlin Conference and under the auspices of the United nations.”

“AKI” detailed that the source seemed ambiguous regarding the weak influence of Western powers throughout the Libyan conflict. Regarding the preponderant role of Turkey and Russia in Libya, he said “the UN resolution must be respected and the arms’ entry stopped.”

It is noteworthy that a joint declaration signed by the EU High Representative for Security and Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, and the Prime Ministers of Italy, France and Germany, was issued a few days ago calling for the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya, in addition to an immediate ceasefire.
