Turkey Considering Two Military Bases in Libya

According to Reuters news agency, Turkey and the Government of National Accord (GNA) are believed to be discussing the possible use of two military bases in the North African country.

On Monday, Reuters cited a Turkish source saying the move could lead to a lasting Turkish presence in the southern Mediterranean. No firm decisions have been made over the possible use of Misrata naval base and Al-Watiya air base by Turkey.

“Turkey using Al-Watiya … is on the agenda. It could also be possible for the Misrata naval base to be used by Turkey” said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Libyan National Army (LNA) forces have recently withdrawn from Tripoli, with the fighting now focused in and around the city of Sirte.

Last week, Turkey stated it could expand its cooperation in Libya with new energy and construction deals once the conflict ends.
