Italian Senator Says Parliamentary Majority at Stake Over Immigration Treaty with Libya

The president of the Forza Italia Group of the Senate Anna Maria Bernini has said in a statement that the parliamentary majority is at stake regarding the immigration treaty with Libya.

An Italian senator added that with the rapid increase in the number of docking operations by immigration boats and NGO ships in the Mediterranean, tension and uncertainty has spread among the parliamentary majority.

“We will see whether the five-star movement will deny what it declared when it was part of the previous government,” Bernini said, noting that “they will probably be able to postpone the matter until September, as the case is in the way of a majority that is forced not to decide to move forward.”

An unavoidable clause in the treaty is a vote on foreign military missions, which includes an agreement with Libya to stop migrants as well, in which we have rejected the indiscriminate reception of migrants, the opposition senator added.

Bernini noted that Forza Italia voted firmly on security decisions, pondering who will be responsible for re-pumping the vast expenses since 2017 spent on reception centres and approaching five billion euros.

This influx of money helps traffickers earn money from immigrants, as some say immigration is more profitable than drug trafficking, she stated.
