On Saturday, the Libyan Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez al-Sarraj, held talks with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tabboune in Algiers to discuss the latest political and security developments in Libya.
The meeting was attended by Algerian Prime Minister Abdul Aziz Jarad, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Sabri Boukadoum, and a number of senior Algerian officials, while the Libyan delegation included Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Taher Siala, Minister of Interior, Fathi Bashaga, and commander of the Western Military Zone Major General Osama al-Juwaili, in addition to the Libyan Ambassador to the European Union Hafed Kaddour.
During the meeting, the Algerian Presidency praised the historical relations that bring together the two peoples, stressing that Algeria always stands alongside the Libyan people.
He also reiterated his support for the Government of National Accord (GNA) and the efforts being exerted by Al-Sarraj in order to overcome the current crisis in Libya.
Sarraj thanked the Algerian president, his government and its people for their firm support for the security, stability and sovereignty of Libya, stressing the importance of Algeria’s role in resolving the Libyan crisis.
The two leaders also tackled ways of finding a way out of the Libyan crisis so that the country could restore its security and stability.
The Libyan officials’ visit to Algeria came only a week after the Head of Libya’s Tobruk-based parliament, Aguila Saleh, was in Algiers to discuss the Libyan crisis.
Al-Sarraj arrived in Algeria on a one-day visit, according to the Algerian news agency.
The State television reported that al-Sarraj’s visit is part of “Algeria’s efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Libyan crisis.”
Algeria, which shares about 1,000 km of borders with Libya, made extensive contacts at the beginning of the year in an attempt to contribute to a political solution to the Libyan conflict that threatens the stability of the region.
