The First Deputy of the Libyan Parliament, Fawzi Al-Nuwairi, and the Second Deputy, Misbah Douma provided a series of observations and suggestions to the United Nations Mission (UNSMIL), aimed at enhancing the success of its efforts and those of Libyan leaders in finding a solution to end the transitional phases.
Their advice is intended to establish realistic, consensual, and legal solutions that would lead to the conducting of Presidential and Parliamentar elections, in a manner that reflects the will of the Libyan people.
This exchange took place during a meeting on Tuesday between Al-Nuwairi, Douma, and the UN Envoy to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily in Benghazi.
The meeting conveyed a clear message about the stance of the Parliament on the initiative proposed by the UN Envoy. The message emphasized that “any position representing the institutions should come from within these institutions, as established by the Constitutional Declaration and its amendments, rather than from individual perspectives.”
The meeting also discussed the latest political developments in the country, and the combined Libyan and UN efforts to resolve the Libyan crisis and move forward towards conducting elections.
On Monday, the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, received Bathily in Benghazi.
The meeting was held to discuss the latest political developments. Bathily mentioned that he had consultations with Haftar, addressing the latest political situation with depth and candour.
He added that they had agreed on the necessity of addressing all issues related to the political process, and facilitating elections in the near term.
He highlighted that Haftar expressed his support for the current efforts being exerted. As well as elaborating on his ideas regarding ways to ensure the success of the preparatory meeting for key stakeholders in Libya.
