On Thursday, the Deputy Head of Libya’s Presidential Council Mousa Al-Koni held a pivotal meeting with the European Union Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM).
The meeting focused on reinforcing border security and enhancing EU-Libya cooperation. This meeting also marks the departure of Natalina Cea as the Head of EUBAM, highlighted her significant contributions and the ongoing commitment of EUBAM to support Libya’s security initiatives.
Al-Koni’s acknowledgment of Cea’s work reflects the appreciation of her efforts in enhancing Libya’s border management capabilities.
During her tenure, EUBAM has been crucial in addressing one of Libya’s most pressing challenges – securing its borders. This is especially important given Libya’s strategic geographic position, straddling key migration and trade routes in the Mediterranean.
The discussion highlighted the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between EUBAM and Libya. This agreement lays the groundwork for the formation of a joint committee, aimed at fostering effective collaboration in border security. This MoU represents a significant step forward in Libya’s relations with the EU, underscoring a mutual commitment to address border security challenges collaboratively.
Libya’s vast land and sea borders have long been points of concern, given their roles in migration, trafficking, and security issues. Effective management of these borders is vital for Libya’s internal stability, and for combating transnational criminal activities. Al-Koni emphasised the need for continued support and expertise from EUBAM and the broader EU community, reaffirming the value of this partnership in strengthening Libya’s borders.
As Libya continues its journey towards stability and governance reform, international support remains crucial. The partnership with EUBAM is a testament to the EU’s commitment to assist Libya in overcoming its challenges. This collaboration not only aids in securing Libya’s borders, but also contributes to the stability and security of the broader Mediterranean region.
This partnership is set to play a key role in shaping Libya’s future, as the country works to rebuild its institutions and restore peace and order. The EU’s ongoing engagement through EUBAM is pivotal in this endeavour, offering a blend of support, expertise, and international cooperation crucial for Libya’s path toward a stable and secure future.
