28 Illegal Migrants Deported from Libya

In a significant move by the Tabruk Migration Control, 28 Egyptian migrants were deported through the Amsaad border crossing.

Miftah Al-Shalwi, Head of the Media Unit at the Tabruk Migration Control, informed Libya 24 News that the deportation was carried out following directives from the Head of the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency in eastern Libya.

The instructions mandated the deportation of individuals with infectious diseases, and those involved in illegal migration present in the country. These deportations were carried out without legal proceedings, through border crossings.

Al-Shalwi highlighted that among the deportees, three were diagnosed with hepatitis. This move is part of broader efforts to control the spread of infectious diseases, and manage illegal migration within Libya.

The deportation of these migrants underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the Libyan authorities, in managing migration flows. The decision reflects Libya’s commitment to enforcing its migration policies, while addressing public health concerns. The situation continues to evolve as Libya navigates complex issues surrounding migration, public health, and border control.

Days ago, the Security Directorate of Benghazi announced the detention of a significant number of migrant workers, who had entered the country illegally.

In a statement released on Monday, the Directorate highlighted the efforts of the Ras Ibeida Police Station in “developing a focused plan to combat and eliminate these occurrences.” The statement mentioned the implementation of “surprise stops and raids in areas where illegal migrants are found.”

Libya serves as a transit country for migrants trying to reach Europe, particularly through the Italian coastline. According to the latest figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), more than 153,000 migrants reached Italy this year from Tunisia, and Libya.

On 17 December, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that 61 migrants, including women and children, drowned in a “tragic” boat accident off the coast of the Libyan port of Zuwara.
