The Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Ageela Saleh held a meeting with the Parliament-designated Prime Minister, Osama Hamad to discuss the reconstruction efforts in the flood-affected area in eastern Libya.
Saleh was briefed on the activities of the Reconstruction and Stability Committee, and the Fund for the Reconstruction of Derna and the affected areas.
The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the Reconstruction and Stability Committee, Hatem Al-Araibi, and the Executive Director of the Fund for the Reconstruction of Derna and the Affected Areas, Belgassem Haftar.
A statement from the Parliament indicated that the meeting, “reviewed the progress of ongoing projects across the country under the supervision of the Reconstruction and Stability Committee and the Fund for the Reconstruction of Derna.”
The projects include the paving of main and secondary roads, the construction of bridges, lighting works, green spaces, and parks. As well as the maintenance and development of public housing buildings, and government and non-governmental facilities.
Derna is poised for a significant transformation, with the Derna Reconstruction Fund signing crucial contracts with Egypt’s Arab Contractors Company.
This move marks a substantial step in the post-conflict reconstruction of Libya. The focus of these contracts lies in rebuilding critical infrastructure in Derna, particularly targeting bridges devastated by the floods from the Mediterranean storm, Daniel.
Key projects include the construction of new bridges at the western entrance of Derna, over Wadi Abu Mahbool and Wadi Markos. These bridges form a vital component of the city’s restoration, facilitating economic rejuvenation and connectivity.
On 10 September, a devastating storm swept through several eastern regions of Libya, notably the cities of Derna, Benghazi, Al-Bayda, Al-Marj, and Sousse. This resulted in significant destruction, and led to the loss of thousands of lives, injuries, and missing individuals.
