On Tuesday, the Tunisian Minister of National Defence, Imed Hazgui, held a meeting with Commander of US Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Stephen J. Townsend. They discussed military cooperation between the two countries, in addition to the latest developments in Libya.

During the meeting, the two officials discussed the regional security situation in Libya. This comes after the AFRICOM commander’s recent visit, and his meeting with Libyan officials. The Tunisian Minister confirmed the need for a political settlement that takes into account the interests of the Libyan people. “Tunisia refuses all forms of foreign military intervention in Libya”, he stressed.

The AFRICOM Commander stressed the agreement of the US, and Tunisian positions, underlining their willingness to “support all efforts to end the armed conflict, and identify a political solution in Libya”. They also discussed possible ways for enhancing military cooperation between Tunisia, and the United States.

The meeting was held on Monday in El-Aouina, in the presence of the US ambassadors to Tunisia, and Libya, and members of the Supreme Armed Forces Council (SAC). Hazgui stressed the importance of Tunisian-American cooperation, especially since the United States was a privileged partner of Tunisia.
