In Libya’s Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar region, a significant tree-planting campaign is underway, targeting the planting of approximately 2000 diverse seedlings to combat carbon emissions. This initiative, sponsored by the National Oil Corporation (NOC) and overseen by the Agriculture and Animal Wealth Sector, involves the participation of the Agricultural Police Department of Al Bayda.
The effort focuses on the Green Mountain areas, initiating the planting phase on February 10 in Al-Asah and Al-Jafra, central-southern Libya. This campaign forms part of the broader “Think About Tomorrow” initiative, introduced by NOC’s Chairman at the COP28 climate summit, aiming to plant one million trees across 40 sites in Libya. The selection of tree species is tailored to the environmental conditions of each location.
The project is designed to serve multiple environmental goals, such as increasing green spaces in areas experiencing forest cover reduction. It also seeks to enhance agricultural resilience against climate change risks, including drought and desertification, issues that are becoming increasingly pressing in the face of the global climate crisis.
Highlighting the urgency of such initiatives, UNICEF has previously pointed out the growing threat of desertification altering Libya’s landscape, with a caution against the encroachment of urban development on natural green spaces. The agency notes that over 95% of Libya is classified as desert or semi-desert, making the conservation and expansion of green areas a critical environmental priority.
