Germany Extends Role in EU Mission in Libya

The German government announced on Wednesday its decision to extend the country’s involvement in the European Union Naval Force Mediterranean Operation (EUNAVFOR MED) IRINI for an additional year. This extension permits the deployment of up to 300 German military personnel to the mission, which is focused on enforcing the United Nations-imposed arms embargo on Libya.

According to a statement from government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit at a press conference in Berlin, Germany’s contribution to the mission is set to continue until April 30 of the next year, pending parliamentary approval.

The German military currently has approximately ten personnel actively engaged in the operation, performing aerial surveillance and supporting the mission’s headquarters in Rome.

Hebestreit noted Germany’s commitment to the European Union’s common security and defense policy and its dedication to contributing to Libya’s stabilization. He also referred to the challenges facing Libya, including political fragmentation and a stalled peace process.

Since launching in March 2020, the EU mission has conducted inquiries into around 13,000 vessels, inspected 26 ships, and identified three instances of embargo violations. Operation IRINI not only aims to prevent the smuggling of arms into Libya but also seeks to halt the unauthorized export of oil from the nation.

Libya has experienced significant turmoil following the 2011 uprising that led to the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi. The resulting power vacuum has divided the country between competing administrations in the east and the west, supported by various militias and international allies. Despite numerous United Nations-led initiatives to foster peace and establish a unified government, persistent violence and political discord have hindered these efforts.

The UN arms embargo was introduced to curb the conflict’s escalation by blocking further military support. Despite this, violations of the embargo have continued, exacerbating the conflict and instability in Libya. Operation IRINI is part of the international community’s efforts to enforce the embargo and advocate for a political resolution in the country.
