The Libyan Ministry of Justice of the Government of National Unity (GNU) successfully repatriated a Libyan prisoner from Italy on Wednesday, as part of the prisoner exchange agreement between the two countries. This marks a significant milestone in their bilateral relations.

In a statement, the Ministry announced the safe arrival of the Libyan national at Mitiga International Airport, withholding details regarding the prisoner’s identity and legal proceedings in Italy.

The prisoner exchange agreement was signed on September 29, 2023, in Rome by Halima Abdulrahman, the Libyan Justice Minister, and her Italian counterpart, Carlo Nordio. It signifies a shared commitment to enhancing legal and judicial cooperation, representing a crucial step in diplomatic relations between the two Mediterranean nations.

This agreement reflects the improving ties and collaborative spirit between Libya and Italy. For Libya, amid efforts to recover from internal conflict and pursue national reconciliation, such agreements are instrumental in rebuilding institutions and restoring its global standing. Italy’s support underscores the importance of Mediterranean collaboration in these endeavors.
