The European Union Mission and diplomatic missions of EU member states in Libya have called for the immediate disclosure of the whereabouts of Libyan political activist Al-Mahdi Abdulati, urging his unconditional release following his reported detention in Misrata earlier this month.

In a joint statement, the EU Mission expressed deep concern over Abdulati’s arrest on March 18 and said he is being held in an undisclosed location. The statement confirmed full solidarity with his family and warned that the case raises serious human rights concerns.

Concerns Over Enforced Disappearance and Civil Freedoms

The EU noted that Abdulati’s case, described as a potential enforced disappearance, reflects broader reports of shrinking civic space in Libya. It warned that the continued targeting of activists and political voices poses a growing threat to freedom of expression and civil liberties in the country.

The statement urged all relevant authorities to immediately reveal Abdulati’s location, guarantee his physical safety, and ensure his prompt and unconditional release.

Calls for Accountability and End to Arbitrary Detentions

The EU Mission stressed the need to hold accountable those responsible for his arbitrary detention and any potential mistreatment, calling for swift legal action without delay.

It reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to supporting accountability, rule of law, and the protection of human rights across Libya.

The call follows a similar demand by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), which earlier urged authorities to release Abdulati and end arbitrary detention practices, while ensuring accountability for violations.

The case has intensified scrutiny on Libya’s human rights record, particularly regarding the treatment of political activists and the protection of civil freedoms.
