Libya’s Development and Reconstruction Fund has officially reopened the Omar Ibn Abdulaziz Mosque in the eastern city of Derna after completing its full reconstruction following the devastating floods that damaged the building.
The reopening forms part of the Fund’s wider programme to restore religious, public and community facilities affected by the catastrophic floods that struck Derna.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Sheikh Abdulkarim Al-Mayar, Director of the Derna Endowments Office, Saad Al-Zawi, General Supervisor of the Fund’s projects in Derna, as well as mosque officials and local residents.
According to the Fund, the mosque was completely rebuilt after suffering extensive damage during the floods, allowing it to resume its role as a place of worship and a community gathering point.
The project was carried out under the directives of Belgassem Haftar, Director General of the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund, as part of ongoing efforts to restore essential infrastructure and public services across Derna.
The Fund said reopening key facilities, including mosques, supports the city’s recovery, strengthens stability and helps restore normal daily life for residents following one of Libya’s worst natural disasters.
