The Saudi Foreign Ministry has expressed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s approval of the outcomes from the recent meeting hosted by the Arab League.
This significant gathering included key Libyan officials: the Head of the Libyan Presidential Council, the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, and the Head of the Libyan High Council of State.
The meeting aimed to bolster the political settlement efforts to pave the way for presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya.
In reaffirming its stance, the Ministry reiterated Saudi Arabia’s support for all Arab and international endeavors to secure peace and stability for Libya and its people. The Kingdom stands in solidarity with measures that ensure the progression and prosperity of Libya, safeguarding its national interests.
This diplomatic gathering underscores the Arab League’s efforts in addressing the challenges faced by Libya. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s endorsement of the meeting’s resolutions reflects its ongoing commitment to the stability and welfare of the Libyan people, emphasizing the importance of unity and concerted efforts in the Arab world to achieve lasting peace and development.
Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, praised the agreement reached by the Libyan parties to form a new unified government.
During a press conference at the Arab League’s headquarters, Aboul Gheit emphasised the importance of Libya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting any interference in its political process.
He announced the formation of a technical committee to resolve outstanding issues within a specified timeframe, aiming to form a unified government tasked with overseeing the electoral process.
Agreements reached included unifying sovereign positions and scheduling an urgent second round of talks to finalize and implement these agreements swiftly.
Aboul Gheit emphasised the Arab League’s role in seeking solutions to the crisis, acknowledging its importance in reaching resolutions.
Mohamed al-Mnifi, head of the Presidential Council, expressed support for any political consensus on the electoral process, stating that today’s outcomes align with Libyans’ aspirations for the upcoming elections.
“We agreed to form a technical committee to address some challenges, with plans for a soon-to-be-held meeting to continue the steps. We affirmed that elections are a means to achieve a stable state,” al-Mnifi added.
Mohamed Al Mnifi, the Chairman of the Presidential Council, Ageela Saleh, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Mohamed Takala, the Head of the High Council of State, unanimously agreed to form a technical committee aimed at revising the contentious laws of the 6+6 committee, to foster broader consensus and resolve critical impasses.
This historic agreement was reached during a tripartite meeting in Cairo, convened under the auspices of the Arab League’s Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit. The primary objective was to catalyze Libyan-led dialogue and break the cycle of political stagnation that has beleaguered the nation.
Central to the joint statement is the imperative to establish a cohesive government that will oversee the electoral process and ensure the provision of vital services to the Libyan populace. The leaders have committed to an urgent follow-up meeting to finalize the agreement’s details and initiate its execution, appealing for backing from the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the broader international community.
