EU Ambassador to Libya Praises HNEC

The European Union’s Ambassador to Libya, Alan Bugeja, praised the level of preparedness of Libya’s High National Election Commission (HNEC). He also praised the efforts made to hold elections in accordance with the highest international standards.

These remarks were made after Bugeja’s visit to the HNEC’s headquarters in Tripoli, on Sunday. During his visit, he met with the Commission’s head, Emad Al-Sayeh, and a member of the Board of Directors, Abdul-Hakim BelKhair.

Al-Sayeh said that the EU Ambassador’s visit comes within the framework of the international community’s support for democracy in Libya. He confirmed the Commission’s readiness to organize elections at any time for a peaceful settlement in the country.

The meeting reviewed the challenges that HNEC could face at the local and national levels due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Al-Sayeh confirmed that they sought to benefit from international experiences in dealing with the current pandemic. This will be especially relevant with regards to the participation of Libyan communities residing abroad in future elections.
