On Wednesday, the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, welcomed the Italian Ambassador to Libya, Gianluca Alberini, and his accompanying delegation.

According to the General Command’s media office, Haftar expressed his pleasure with the visit of the Italian Ambassador and the Consul General of the Italian Embassy in Benghazi.

Haftar emphasized the positive development in the good neighbourly relations between Libya and Italy.

The statement added that the meeting covered discussions on enhancing bilateral cooperation in economic, trade, and cultural fields. They affirmed the role of specialized Italian companies in the reconstruction efforts in various Libyan cities and regions.

Furthermore, the two sides discussed the importance of coordination and joint cooperation to address the issue of illegal migration and the need for practical steps in this regard.

During the meeting, the Italian Ambassador confirmed the imminent launch of direct flights from Benghazi Airport to Rome Airport.

Last month, Haftar hosted a high-level delegation from the Italian government on Tuesday at the army’s headquarters in Benghazi. Led by Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, the delegation included Deputy Foreign Minister Edmondo Cirielli, Italian intelligence chief General Gianni Caravelli, and several other Italian government officials.

General Haftar welcomed the Italian delegation, expressing gratitude for the visit aimed at discussing and exchanging views to enhance partnership and cooperation in security, economic, and trade fields.

The Italian delegation conveyed greetings and congratulations from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to the Commander-in-Chief and the Libyan people on the occasion of Ramadan.

They praised the Libyan National Army’s efforts in combating terrorism, extremism, and illegal immigration, affirming the Italian government’s support for efforts to enhance the political process and conduct elections in Libya for lasting stability.
