Libya’s Illegal Migration Control Department has announced a comprehensive plan to address migrant deportation files, aiming to streamline procedures and tackle longstanding challenges related to irregular migration.
The initiative was discussed during a high-level meeting chaired by the head of the department, Major General Salah Mahmoud Al-Khufifi, alongside senior officials, regional branch directors, and representatives from offices across the country.
Review of Detention Centres and Migrant Status
During the meeting, officials reviewed operations across all branches, including conditions inside detention centres, the number of migrants held, and cases involving individuals with deportation orders issued by judicial, security, and military authorities.
Particular attention was given to vulnerable cases, including injured migrants, as authorities assessed current capacities and operational needs.
Balancing Security Measures and Humanitarian Standards
The department stressed the importance of maintaining strict security procedures while upholding humanitarian principles, ensuring that all actions comply with national laws and international legal frameworks.
Officials highlighted the need for a coordinated approach that preserves public safety while respecting the rights of migrants.
Special Committee Formed to Oversee Deportations
As part of the plan, a specialised committee has been established to develop practical solutions for deportation operations, especially for nationalities facing difficulties in repatriation.
The committee will explore multiple options, including land, air, and sea deportation routes, following a comprehensive assessment of logistical and legal challenges.
Among the priorities is addressing cases involving Sudanese nationals, with tailored strategies expected to facilitate their return in line with international standards.
Proposals to Be Submitted for Government Approval
The committee is expected to submit its recommendations to the Prime Minister of the Libyan government for approval, marking a significant step toward improving the management of migration ملف in the country.
