On Monday, the General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, held talks with many Libyan security and military officials to review the ongoing investigations into the kidnapping of Member of Parliament Ibrahim Al-Drissi.
The attendees included Deputy Minister of Interior Brigadier Faraj Aqaim, Head of Internal Security Major General Osama Al-Drissi, and Benghazi Security Directorate Chief Major General Ahmed Al-Shamakh.
During the meeting, Haftar emphasized the urgency of intensifying efforts to locate the perpetrators and ensure the safe return of MP Al-Drissi to his family.
Ibrahim Al-Drissi, a prominent member of the Libyan House of Representatives, was recently reported kidnapped, sparking significant concern and prompting swift action from the highest levels of Libya’s security apparatus. This incident underscores the ongoing instability and security challenges in Libya, a country that has been mired in conflict since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
The kidnapping of a high-profile political figure like Al-Drissi highlights the volatile security situation and the risks faced by public officials in Libya. This incident has raised alarm not only within the Libyan government but also among international observers closely monitoring the situation.
The kidnapping incident could have broader implications for Libya’s political stability and security situation. It highlights the ongoing risks and challenges in securing the country and protecting its political figures. The response by Haftar and the security apparatus will be closely watched as a measure of their capability to handle such crises.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has also expressed its deep concern regarding the kidnapping of Ibrahim Al Drissi, an elected member of the House of Representatives for Benghazi. The mission has called on the relevant authorities to locate and secure his immediate release, urging a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and holding those responsible accountable under the law.
UNSMIL strongly condemned all forms of arbitrary detention across Libya. Such actions undermine the rule of law and create a climate of fear.
