“Mellitah” Restoration Lifts Libya’s Oil Production

Libya’s oil sector recorded a new operational gain after Mellitah Oil and Gas Company successfully restored the R11 well to production, boosting output by more than 2,000 barrels per day.

The company said technical teams completed maintenance work on the well and installed an electric submersible pump, allowing production to resume at a rate of around 2,062 barrels per day. The development forms part of a broader plan to reactivate idle wells and increase overall capacity.

An official statement from the National Oil Corporation praised the achievement, highlighting the role of engineering teams in completing the work efficiently. “This reflects the continued efforts to enhance production sustainability and meet operational targets,” the statement said.

The move comes as Libya seeks to stabilise and expand its oil output following years of disruptions caused by conflict, infrastructure damage, and political instability. Maintaining steady production remains a key priority for authorities, given the sector’s central role in the national economy.

Higher output is expected to support state revenues and improve foreign currency inflows, which are critical for funding imports and stabilising the exchange rate. For many citizens, developments in the oil sector directly affect economic conditions, including public spending and access to basic goods.

Libya’s broader context remains complex, with divisions between eastern and western institutions continuing to affect economic governance. However, oil production has shown relative resilience in recent periods despite these challenges.

Still, the sector faces ongoing risks, including technical constraints, security concerns, and the need for sustained investment in ageing infrastructure. Any disruption could quickly impact production levels and revenues.

Officials say further efforts will focus on maintaining existing wells and bringing additional fields back online. These steps aim to strengthen Libya’s position in global energy markets and support longer-term economic stability.
