The Chargé d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy to Libya, Liu Jian, has announced China’s readiness to resume the embassy’s operations in Tripoli once the security situation improves.
Speaking to the Libyan News Agency, Liu Jian emphasised the historical ties between China and Libya, underscoring China’s support for the Libyan people and institutions in their quest for political and security stability.
Liu Jian reiterated that China is committed to aiding Libya in building a modern state across various fields, free from external interference. He highlighted China’s willingness to exert all efforts towards achieving a sustainable political solution to the Libyan crisis through dialogue and negotiations.
He pointed out that the return of the Chinese Embassy to Tripoli would signify a strengthened bilateral relationship and enhanced cooperation between the two nations.
Liu Jian mentioned that China’s historical relationship with Libya motivates it to contribute positively to Libya’s development and stability.
China aims to facilitate dialogue among Libyan factions and support efforts that lead to a lasting peace agreement. Liu Jian stressed that China would continue to advocate for a negotiated settlement to the Libyan conflict, ensuring that peace and stability are restored.
In his interview, Liu Jian expressed optimism about Libya’s future, hoping that improved security conditions would soon allow for the full resumption of diplomatic activities. He affirmed China’s readiness to assist Libya in various developmental projects and sectors once the situation stabilises.
Last week, Libyan Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU) Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi agreed to initiate the reopening of the Chinese Embassy in Tripoli. This decision was made during a meeting held in China, where they discussed various political and economic issues.
The Libyan government stated that the agreement came as part of discussions aimed at resuming the embassy’s operations in Tripoli. This move will help manage Chinese interests across different sectors and reactivate bilateral agreements.
During their meeting in Beijing, on the sidelines of the 10th Arab-Chinese Forum, Dbaiba and Wang Yi addressed several political and economic topics. According to a statement, Wang Yi praised the recent stability in Libya, which he noted as encouraging for the resumption of economic activities between the two nations.
Dbaiba emphasised the importance of reviving political and economic cooperation, highlighting the strong historical ties between Libya and China that span over 60 years. They agreed on the need for unified international political stances on Libya to achieve fair and consensual election laws.
The meeting also focused on reactivating 18 agreements between the two countries and coordinating the organization of the China-Libya High Committee. They discussed forming a joint committee to oversee the committee’s meetings and review the agreements.
