Libyan Police Launch “Anti-Begging” Campaign in Benghazi

Benghazi’s Security Directorate has launched a series of operations targeting the increase in begging at city intersections and streets, specifically by the Women’s Police Division.

According to a statement from Benghazi’s Security Directorate, these operations have resulted in the arrest of several women involved in begging activities.

The initiative is part of a directive from Benghazi’s Security Director, Major General Ahmed Al-Shamakh, aimed at combating the rising phenomenon of begging observed recently. The campaigns have been focused on various intersections, streets, and previously identified locations within the city.

During these operations, a number of women of Egyptian nationality were apprehended. The Security Directorate stated that these women would be handed over to the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency for deportation back to their home country.

The Directorate emphasized that these campaigns will continue until the issue is fully addressed and eradicated. The increased presence and activities of beggars have been a concern for local authorities, prompting this decisive action.

In another context, the Director General of the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund, Belgasem Haftar, met with Stephanie Khoury, Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), and her accompanying delegation, in Benghazi, on Thursday.

During the meeting, Haftar provided a detailed explanation of the reconstruction strategy for cities and regions included in the plan. He also discussed several points of mutual interest between the two parties.

The meeting between Belgasem Khalifa Haftar and Stephanie Khoury is a significant step in ongoing efforts to rebuild and stabilize Libya, particularly in the eastern region, which has been heavily impacted by years of conflict.

The reconstruction plan aims to address the extensive damage caused by the prolonged conflict. It includes rebuilding essential infrastructure such as roads, schools, hospitals, and public utilities. The strategy also focuses on economic revitalization, aiming to create jobs and stimulate economic growth through various development projects.
