On Monday, Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades said that Turkey’s escalating role in Syria and Libya was due to the weakness of the European Union.

“The European Union cannot stand idly by in the face of Turkey’s harmful behavior,” Anastasiades was quoted as saying by the ‘Cyprus News Agency’.

Earlier, Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio stressed the importance of the EU assuming its responsibility and seeking a solution to restore peace in Libya.

“Political dialogue must be invested in to reach a negotiated and lasting solution to the Libyan crisis” Di Maio said, according to ‘Alarabiya’ news agency.

The Italian Foreign Minister pointed out that the EU’s ‘IRINI’ operation, which aims to monitor the UN arms embargo on Libya, will contribute greatly to ongoing peace efforts.
