The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya successfully organised a Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) flight, returning 164 vulnerable and stranded migrants to Somalia.

The flight departed from Sebha, southern Libya, with the migrants heading to Mogadishu and Hargeisa, key cities in Somalia.

This return is part of IOM’s ongoing efforts to assist migrants who are stranded in Libya under difficult conditions, helping them safely return to their home countries.

The VHR programme, a critical lifeline for many, provides not only safe passage back home but also reintegration support to help migrants rebuild their lives..

Since August 2022, IOM has facilitated the return of 293 Somali migrants from Libya, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in addressing the challenges faced by migrants in conflict zones.

In addition to organising the return flights, IOM Libya provides reintegration assistance to migrants upon their arrival. This support can range from vocational training to small business start-up assistance, ensuring that returning migrants have the resources to successfully reintegrate into their communities.

The return of these 164 individuals highlights the dire situation for many migrants in Libya, where conflict and instability have left thousands in vulnerable conditions. Many face exploitation, limited access to basic services, and significant risks to their safety and wellbeing.

The VHR programme not only provides a humanitarian solution for these individuals but also helps alleviate the burden on host countries struggling with migration challenges.

IOM continues to collaborate with Libyan authorities and international partners to address the needs of migrants and ensure that those who wish to return home can do so safely and with dignity.
