On Thursday, the US Embassy in Libya shared a statement from Chargé d’Affaires Leslie Ordman, reflecting on the progress of reconstruction efforts in Benghazi following years of turmoil.

In a post on the embassy’s official X (formerly Twitter) platform, Ordman expressed his gratitude to Mayor Saqr Bujwari of Benghazi for the warm hospitality extended to him during his recent visits. Ordman emphasized the significance of Benghazi’s recovery efforts and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to fostering stronger connections with Libyan communities.

“It was my pleasure to host the Mayor of Benghazi, Saqr Bujwari, at my residence in Tunis yesterday,” Ordman said. “I thanked him for the warm reception I received during my visits to Benghazi.”

The US diplomat noted the important steps being taken to revive Benghazi’s cultural and economic life. “I witnessed firsthand the significant efforts to rebuild the city after years of conflict. Our embassy team remains committed to deepening the bonds between the American and Libyan people, not only in Benghazi but also in municipalities across the country.”

Benghazi, Libya’s second-largest city, has endured years of conflict and devastation, especially during the civil war that followed the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi.

In recent years, Benghazi has made significant strides toward recovery, focusing on restoring essential services, reviving the local economy, and promoting cultural activities. The city’s seaport and airport have resumed operations, and investment projects are being explored to attract growth in key sectors like infrastructure, energy, and tourism.

However, challenges remain, including political instability and governance issues, as Libya continues to navigate its complex post-conflict transition.
