Italy has reiterated its unwavering support for Libya’s democratic transition by providing €4.8 million through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) since 2016.

A portion of this funding—€850,000—has been specifically allocated to support municipal elections, emphasizing Italy’s commitment to fostering democratic governance at both local and national levels.

The Italian Embassy in Libya issued a statement underscoring the critical importance of this support in strengthening Libya’s political stability and institutional development. This funding reflects Italy’s broader mission to encourage political inclusivity, promote representative governance, and ensure peace and prosperity for the Libyan people.

Municipal elections are pivotal to empowering Libya’s local councils and addressing community-level challenges.

Italy’s €850,000 contribution to these elections has played a vital role in enabling fair and transparent voting processes, overcoming logistical barriers, and building confidence in Libya’s electoral system. These elections are a cornerstone of Libya’s efforts to decentralize governance and rebuild trust between citizens and institutions.

The funding has been used to support key initiatives, including voter education campaigns, technical assistance for Libya’s High National Election Commission (HNEC), and upgrades to electoral infrastructure. Italy’s efforts align with international goals to ensure that Libyan citizens have an active role in shaping their future.

Italy’s contributions extend far beyond election day. The €4.8 million investment signifies Italy’s belief in the importance of a unified Libya with strong, effective governance. Municipal elections are a foundational step in achieving this vision, creating pathways for local leadership and addressing deep-seated divisions within the country.

The Italian government has also emphasized its partnership with the UNDP in advancing democracy in Libya. This collaboration ensures that Italy’s financial support translates into meaningful progress, from technical training for election officials to improved monitoring mechanisms that safeguard the integrity of the voting process.

The international community, including the European Union, has lauded Libya’s strides in holding municipal elections as an essential step toward stability and development. Italy, as a leading EU member, has been at the forefront of these efforts, advocating for transparent and peaceful elections. The EU has called on all Libyan stakeholders to uphold democratic principles and ensure an inclusive environment for voting.
