Libya Boosts Southern Electricity Network With Samnu Power Station Upgrade

Technical teams from the General Electricity Company of Libya have begun installing a new high-voltage transmission tower at the Samnu 66 kV power station in southern Libya, as part of efforts to strengthen the national electricity network and improve power stability in the region.

According to the company, the work started on Friday and forms part of a broader programme aimed at upgrading key components of the country’s electricity infrastructure. The installation is being carried out by the Construction Company for Electrical Works, under the direct supervision of the General Electricity Company of Libya.

Officials said the project is designed to enhance the operational capacity of the transmission network and support the long-term stability of electricity supply in southern Libyan communities.

The Samnu 66 kV station plays an important role in distributing electricity across parts of southern Libya, where vast distances and harsh desert conditions often pose logistical challenges for power infrastructure maintenance.

The company explained that installing the new transmission tower will help reinforce the high-voltage network connected to the station and improve the efficiency of power distribution to surrounding areas.

The initiative is part of ongoing maintenance and development programmes implemented by the General Electricity Company across several regions of Libya. These programmes aim to reduce technical faults, increase grid reliability and ensure a more stable electricity supply for residents.

In recent years, Libya’s electricity sector has faced persistent challenges including ageing infrastructure, rising demand and damage to power facilities during years of political instability.

Authorities have therefore prioritised maintenance projects and network upgrades to strengthen the grid and improve service reliability, particularly in remote southern regions where infrastructure development has historically lagged behind other parts of the country.

The company stressed that continued investment in grid infrastructure is essential for supporting economic activity and improving living conditions for citizens.

Officials added that several additional maintenance and development works are currently under way in southern Libya as part of a broader strategy to modernise the country’s electricity network and ensure more reliable power supply nationwide.
