The development of Benina International Airport in Benghazi is nearing completion, according to Libya’s Development and Reconstruction Fund, as work continues to modernise one of the country’s most important air transport facilities.
The fund said the project aims to improve services for passengers and airlines while increasing the airport’s operational capacity. The work is being carried out under the direct supervision of the fund’s Director General, Belgasem Haftar, as part of wider reconstruction and development projects across Benghazi.
Several service buildings at Benina International Airport have already been completed, including the airport police centre, the administrative building and the aircraft refuelling facility.
Construction of the international terminal has reached 99%, while work on the domestic terminal is 55% complete. The new air traffic control tower has reached a completion rate of 25%.
Maintenance work on the Civil Defence building has exceeded 65%. Meanwhile, infrastructure projects, including car parks, rainwater drainage networks and other essential services, have reached approximately 85%.
The fund added that work is continuing to expand the airport’s runway and aircraft parking areas. These upgrades form part of a comprehensive plan to increase the airport’s readiness, improve safety and accommodate a greater number of flights.
Benina International Airport serves Benghazi and much of eastern Libya. The completion of the development project is expected to strengthen domestic and international air connections and support economic activity in the region.
