Armed Attack in Libyan Capital Claims Pregnant Woman’s Life

The National Institution for Human Rights in Libya (NIHRL) has condemned the killing of a pregnant woman and the injury of her husband at the hands of armed men in Tripoli. The commission has called for holding those responsible accountable and bringing them to justice.

In a statement, the NIHRL shared a video documenting the incident, which showed armed men in military or security uniforms opening fire on a civilian vehicle in a public road in the Ghot Al-Shaal area of central Tripoli. The video revealed that the shooting occurred as the assailants attempted to stop the vehicle.

The indiscriminate gunfire resulted in the death of the woman, who was four months pregnant, and injuries to her husband, identified as Mohamed Embarak, a resident of Ajilat. The victim was identified as Nesma Ibrahim.

The NIHRL called on the Attorney General and the Acting Minister of Interior to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. They emphasized the importance of uncovering the full details, holding those responsible accountable, and ensuring they face justice.

In its statement, the commission underscored that the incident constitutes a criminal act punishable by law and a grave violation of human rights. The NIHRL reiterated the necessity of ending impunity for perpetrators of such crimes and bringing them to justice.

The organization also highlighted the need to combat impunity for severe human rights violations, particularly those committed by security personnel entrusted with protecting civilians. It stressed that such acts of violence undermine public trust and the principles of justice.

In another development, social media reports claimed that the armed men involved in the shooting were affiliated with the Stability Support Apparatus, led by Ghnewa Al-Kikli.
