As the world marks the 25th anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the United States has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Libyan women. Coinciding with the commencement of the #16DaysOfActivism campaign, the U.S. Embassy in Libya has joined forces with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to advocate for the safeguarding of women and girls from all forms of violence, including online harassment.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women serves as a vital reminder of the ongoing struggle against gender-based violence. It also kicks off the annual 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, an international campaign originating from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute coordinated by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership in 1991.

In a statement released by the U.S. Embassy, the ambassador emphasized the critical need for comprehensive protection mechanisms that shield women from physical, emotional, and digital abuse. “Our renewed commitment on this significant anniversary is a testament to the U.S.’s dedication to advancing the rights and safety of women in Libya and around the globe,” the ambassador stated.

This year’s theme focuses particularly on the digital realm, recognizing the increasing number of threats women face online. The campaign advocates for stronger legal frameworks and enforcement mechanisms to combat online harassment and cyber threats directed at women.

Collaborative efforts between international bodies like UNSMIL and national governments are crucial in creating a safer environment for women. By promoting awareness and fostering legislative reforms, these organizations aim to combat the pervasive issue of violence against women in all its forms.

As the campaign progresses, the U.S. and UNSMIL will continue to work towards creating impactful changes that ensure women’s safety and uphold their rights across Libya and beyond.
