Libya has been left in shock following the violent murder of a 10-year-old autistic girl in the southern city of Ubari, according to Al-Arabiya news. The young victim was found dead in a garbage dump after being raped and killed with a sharp object.
Her body was discovered earlier this week in a bag, just a day after her family reported her missing. Forensic reports confirmed the horrific nature of the crime, revealing she had been assaulted and fatally attacked with a machete.
The brutal act has ignited outrage across Libya, with many taking to social media to express their anger and demand justice. Activists and citizens have called for severe punishment for the perpetrator, with widespread demands for the reinstatement of the death penalty to deter similar crimes.
On Facebook, activist Sarah Mohammed wrote: “A 10-year-old child, innocent and defenceless, fell victim to a monster. Her autism made her more vulnerable, unable to resist or cry for help. What justification exists for such barbarity?”
Prominent activist Suleiman Al-Haj also voiced his opinion, advocating for the reactivation of capital punishment. “The death penalty is the only suitable punishment for this heinous crime. Simple imprisonment is not justice for the victim or her family. Let this serve as a warning to others,” he said.
Libya has not carried out official executions for over 13 years. The recent crime highlights the urgent need for reforms in the justice system to ensure that perpetrators of such brutal acts are held accountable.
