Libyan MP Backs Haftar’s Initiative to End Division in Libya

On Thursday, Libyan Member of Parliament Ali Al-Soul expressed strong support for the initiative by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), and the parliament’s steps to pass a National Reconciliation and Transitional Justice Law.

“We welcome the initiative by the Commander of the Libyan National Army and the parliament’s efforts to issue the National Reconciliation and Transitional Justice Law. These efforts will help end division, unite Libyans, and bring stability to the country,” Al-Soul said during an interview with Al-Masar television.

The law is part of broader reconciliation efforts being spearheaded by the eastern-based House of Representatives. Ageela Saleh, Speaker of the House, confirmed that parliament is actively working to draft a comprehensive reconciliation framework, calling it a “positive step to unite Libyans and foster cohesion.”

Speaking during a meeting with Denis Sassou Nguesso, President of Congo-Brazzaville and Chair of the African Union’s High-Level Committee on Libya, Saleh underscored the importance of reconciliation for Libya’s future. “This law will be a significant step toward national unity and stability,” Saleh said.

Saleh also criticised the Government of National Unity, led by Abdulhamid Dbaiba, accusing it of undermining stability by supporting militias. “The government’s actions encourage division and instability, as it remains a primary supporter of militias that disrupt the peace in the capital,” he said.

The push for reconciliation gained further traction during a high-profile meeting in Benghazi, where Haftar, Saleh, and Libyan Prime Minister Osama Hammad met with Nguesso to discuss the African Union’s role in facilitating peace in Libya. The talks focused on advancing reconciliation efforts and fostering cooperation among Libyan factions.
