Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf has emphasised the need for Libyans to work towards achieving national reconciliation. Speaking during his visit to the Republic of Congo, Attaf highlighted the prolonged challenges facing Libya, now 14 years into its crisis.
“The Libyan people are still waiting for a resolution to their crisis. The solution must come from the Libyans themselves through a national reconciliation process,” Attaf told reporters.
He stressed that resolving the Libyan crisis requires a robust electoral process under the supervision of the United Nations, which is closely coordinating with the African Union and President Denis Sassou Nguesso, Chair of the AU High-Level Committee on Libya. Attaf also underscored the necessity of ending foreign interventions, describing them as significant obstacles to finding a sustainable solution.
During his official visit as a special envoy of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Attaf met with President Denis Sassou Nguesso in Brazzaville. He delivered a written message from President Tebboune, reaffirming Algeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing joint African initiatives.
The meeting provided an opportunity to review progress on the Algerian-Congolese partnership, established during the leaders’ July 2022 meeting in Algeria. It also included discussions on current continental issues, particularly Algeria’s support for President Sassou Nguesso’s efforts to bridge divisions in Libya through his leadership of the AU High-Level Committee.
Attaf concluded by reiterating Algeria’s readiness to contribute actively to regional stability and African unity, with Libya’s peace and reconciliation being central to these efforts.
