Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, Commander of the Libyan National Army, in Cairo today. The meeting, also attended by Hassan Rashad, Chief of Egypt’s General Intelligence, focused on enhancing bilateral relations and ensuring Libya’s stability.
According to the Presidential Spokesperson, the discussions reaffirmed the special relationship between Egypt and Libya. President El-Sisi highlighted the critical connection between Libya’s stability and Egypt’s national security. He emphasized Egypt’s commitment to supporting Libya’s sovereignty, unity, and developmental trajectory, reiterating Egypt’s backing of all initiatives aimed at achieving these goals.
The spokesperson, Ambassador Mohamed El-Shenawy, noted that President El-Sisi expressed Egypt’s dedication to fostering unity and cohesion among Libya’s national institutions. He stressed the need for coordinated efforts among Libyan parties to create a comprehensive political roadmap leading to simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections. The president also underscored the importance of preventing external interference and ensuring the withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries from Libyan territory.
President El-Sisi commended the Libyan National Army for its role in combating terrorism, which has been instrumental in eliminating extremist groups in eastern Libya.
Haftar’s Appreciation of Egypt’s Role
Field Marshal Haftar expressed his deep gratitude for Egypt’s pivotal role in restoring stability to Libya. He praised Egypt’s relentless efforts to support Libyans since the onset of the crisis, highlighting the historic ties between the two nations. Haftar also acknowledged Egypt’s contribution to transferring its developmental expertise to Libya and leveraging the capabilities of renowned Egyptian companies to advance Libya’s reconstruction.
