On Monday, the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Ageela Saleh, met with Stephanie Khoury, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), to discuss the urgent need for unifying Libya’s executive authority and forming a single government. The meeting also emphasized preparations for holding presidential and parliamentary elections.

Saleh reaffirmed the House of Representatives’ commitment to the Libyan Political Agreement, the outcomes of the 6+6 Joint Committee, and all initiatives aimed at ending political division. He stressed the importance of continued cooperation with UNSMIL and the international community to restore stability and achieve national unity.

Khoury emphasized UNSMIL’s dedication to rebuilding trust among Libya’s political factions by fostering dialogue and narrowing differences. She reiterated the UN’s commitment to working with all stakeholders to create conditions conducive to elections and lasting stability.

Both parties agreed on the critical need for a unified executive authority and a single government to address Libya’s challenges and pave the way for credible and transparent elections soon.

Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been plagued by political division and instability. The country is split between the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) led by Abdul Hamid Dbaiba and the eastern-backed administration headed by Osama Hammad, supported by the House of Representatives. Efforts to hold national elections have stalled due to disputes over the constitutional framework and governance.

The 6+6 Joint committee, representing Libya’s legislative chambers, has made strides toward resolving these issues but faces continued obstacles. The international community, including UNSMIL, has played a vital role in mediating between factions to advance unity and democracy.
